Rusty trombone
Rusty trombone is a euphemism for a sexual act involving a man in a standing position with knees and back slightly bent, with feet at least shoulder width apart in order to expose the anus.[1] The other partner typically is on their knees behind the man and performs anilingus while reaching up beneath the testicles or around the body to masturbate the man, mimicking the motions of a trombone player.[1][2] The act is defined primarily by the physical orientation of the partners and the combination of anilingus with penile masturbation; however, other positions and variations are possible.[2]
Health risks
There are numerous health risks involved in coming in contact with a person's anus. There is a high risk of bacterial infection from coming in direct contact with human feces. Consuming raw sewage increases the risk of infection. The health risks include such diseases as hepatitis and parasitic intestinal infections. [3]
Usage history
Rusty trombone has a literal meaning, but the porn industry has been given credit for the sexual meaning of the phrase.[4]
In 2002, the Detroit, Michigan talk radio show Deminski & Doyle began an educational half-hour discussion of urban-legendary sex acts with the statement, "Try to describe carefully what a 'Cleveland steamer' would be..." and then went into details of the blumpkin and the rusty trombone.[5] Fifteen months later, the Federal Communications Commission proposed fine of $27,500 to the station's owner, Infinity Broadcasting (then home to Howard Stern), through a Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL)[6] that specifically referenced rusty trombone in the notice.[5]
Rusty trombone gained wider use in entertainment projects being developed for release in 2005. For example, well known comedians such as Andy Dick are familiar with the seedier meaning of rusty trombone and he used the term in the 2005 documentary film The Aristocrats as part of the infamous dirty joke of the same name.[7] In seeming recognition of the phrase being a part of the filthiest of filthy language, news sources such as The Daily Telegraph,[7] Slant Magazine,[8] New Statesman,[9] and Globe and Mail[4] highlighted rusty trombone in their review of The Aristocrats. In addition, the character Mooj stated, "It's not about these rusty trombones, and these dirty sanchez"[10] in the 2005 movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin[4][11] and the character Sara Blank stated "I know what a rusty trombone is; I used to be a stewardess"[12] in the 2006 movie Strangers with Candy.[12] In the film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, actor Jack Black is seen in walking around the Venice Beach, California boardwalk in a Rusty Trombone T-shirt.[13]
Rusty trombone is part of the 2006 party game PervArtistry, where individuals draw sexual pictures on a board and other players try to guess the sexual synonym for that image.[14]
In 2007, Salt Lake City, Utah activist David Nelson started an online petition calling for the repeal of Utah's existing sodomy law. [15] Reportedly, Utah's existing sodomy law prohibits oral sex, anal sex, and the rusty trombone.[15] Also in 2007, rusty trombone was listed along with AC/DC, Beverly Hillbilly, and Sugar in the Shoes as one of 76 entries in The Contemporary Dictionary of Sexual Euphemisms (2007), with both its literal definition and sexual corollary.[16]
