Affinion Corporation, which prior to 2007 was known as the Trilegiant Corporation (TLG)(previously Progeny Marketing Innovations, previously Benefit Consultants Inc.), is a membership-based discount provider of travel, shopping, health, dental, entertainment, buying clubs, and consumer protection services. TLG/Affinion is the successor to Cendant Membership Services, Inc. and Cendant Incentives. TLG/Affinion claims that it offers risk-free program memberships with money-back guarantees.

One of the most prominent actions made by this company is the mailing of their $10 USD checks. The checks can be cashed by anyone but are addressed to whomever they were mailed to. In small text underneath the amount the check explains, "By cashing or depositing this check you are purchasing a membership in Buyers Advantage." Because the document is indeed a real check, recipients may inadvertently cash the check, or a third party may cash it without the recipients knowledge.

Complaints

Numerous issues with this company have been reported. According to the Better Business Bureau, hundreds of issues have been reported by consumers for deceptive selling practices, unauthorized charges to consumers' credit cards, and failure to respond or resolve issues.[1]

On March 7, 2005, the company made a Settlement Agreement with the Office of the Attorney General of Florida. Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, Chapter 501, Part II, Florida Statutes (“FDUTPA”).[2][3][4]

In July 2005, the Attorney's General of Connecticut, California and Maine brought a lawsuit against TLG/Affinion for allegedly deceiving consumers into enrolling in its clubs.[5]

In December 2006 Trilegiant/Affinion agreed to pay over $8 million dollars to 17 states and their residents to settle allegations they tricked residents into paying for its programs.
