Makeoutclub

Makeoutclub one of the first social networking websites, founded in Boston, MA in July 2000 by Gibby Miller. Makeoutclub was one of the first sites to embody what became known as social networking, predating Myspace, Friendster and Facebook. Makeoutclub's primary function is to unite “indie rockers, hardcore kids, artists, record collectors, comic book geeks, emo nerds, punks, vegan chefs, writers, designers, dreamers and daters”around the world.[1]

History

Makeoutclub (MOC) was started in July 2000 in Boston, MA by Gibby Miller after the demise of the sexyscenesters website. [2]The site’s goal is to bring people together to "form bands, start zines, find roommates and to submit user records, photographs and art to the site for everyone to see".[3]

Users communicate through MOC's internal email MOC Mail and also through the websites messageboards.

In April 2007, Makeoutclub was re-launched with new seasonal design, daily news posts and expanded user profile features. Makeoutclub is currently based out of Los Angeles, CA.

Profile Features

  • MOC users are able to create profiles with fully color customizable ‘skins’ and image wigets.

  • Users have the ability to add other users as friends and can create a ‘best friends’ sub-group viewable on their front page

  • Users are able to upload image and video to their profile gallery.

  • Other user’s comments are viewable on each profile.

  • Each user profile page has a ‘profile view’ count to calculate the number of views each profile has.
