Fort Vancouver High School is a high school in Vancouver, Washington. It is named after Fort Vancouver, an early trading outpost in the Pacific Northwest. Fort Vancouver's mascot is the Trapper, in reference to early fur trade in the area by such groups as Hudson's Bay Company voyageurs.
History
Fort Vancouver was originally built in downtown Vancouver, and was called Vancouver High School. In the fifties, Hudson's Bay High School was built in the downtown area, and a new campus for Fort Vancouver was built at its current location. On April 5, 1972, a class 3 Fujita scale tornado hit the Portland/Vancouver area. The tornado severely damaged Fort Vancouver High School and the neighboring elementary school. Students from Fort Vancouver rushed to the aid of the students and teachers of the elementary school when it collapsed.[1]
Current
Fort Vancouver High School has 86 teachers serving a little more than 1500 students. Students at Fort Vancouver have diverse backgrounds and economic status. 16.8% of the students are in Fort Vancouver's ELL (English Language Learning) program and 11.9% are in Special Education.[2] Approximately one-third of Fort Vancouver's students speak a language other than English when at home.[3] Fort Vancouver High School is the only high school in Vancouver School District with an ELL (English Language Learning) program. Also, At 33years of age. Jeff Snell is the youngest high school princable in washington state.
Magnets
Fort Vancouver is the magnet school in Vancouver School District for Law. Local government has even authorized the students to hold a traffic court once a month.[4] Fort Vancouver is the magnet school for Culinary Arts, and caters a number of events each year. Fort is also the medical magnet.
Other Programs
Students at Fort Vancouver High School can also be involved in Running Start, which allows students to get college credit and high school credit while attending Clark College. Students may also take advatage of vocational programs offered through Clark.
