George Tosh b.1813 Scotland d.1900 Scunthorpe George Tosh was the second locomotive superintendent of the Maryport & Carlisle Railway'. He was appointed about 1854, replacing a Mr.Scott, and left the railway in 1870. His earlier career is not known, but he was apparently resident in Newcastle by 1839, and in Parton [Cumberland] 1843-1848, and in Maryport by 1852. His successor on the M&CR was Hugh Smellie, late works manager for the Glasgow & South Western Railway at Kilmarnock. On leaving the railway, his evident interest in metallurgy led Tosh to become an iron master in Lincolnshire.
Tosh is notable insofar that he was amongst the first railway engineers in the country to introduce coal-burning [rather than coke] fireboxes, fitted the first steel tyred wheels to British engines, and pre-empted the LNWR as the first UK engineer to fit steel boilers/fireboxes [1862, but manufactured by outside suppliers], all quite remarkable achiements for such a small railway. Most of his engines had domeless boilers. Nineteen locomotives of various wheel arrangements were provided during his superintentency.
He was married and had at least seven children. His wife, Isabella, died in 1868.
