Funny Farm

Funny farm is a slang term for a psychiatric hospital. This term is considered by many to be offensive. It uses "funny" in the sense of "not quite right in the head".

The expression figured prominently in the 1966 novelty song hit called They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa! by a musician calling himself "Napoleon XIV" (actually Jerry Samuels, as per the Billboard book). The song describes the vocalist retreating into mental illness due to the fact that his lover abandoned him. It is done entirely in rhythmic recitation, with a constant march-style drumbeat in the background. [1] Excerpt:
