Rubin Andre Carter [1] (born May 12, 1979 in Denver, Colorado, USA) is a National Football League player who currently plays defensive end for the Washington Redskins. He went to University of California, Berkeley. He was drafted by the 49ers in the 1st round (7th overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft. Carter was originally drafted as a defensive lineman, but was converted into a linebacker. The Redskins have since moved Carter back to being a defensive lineman.
High school career
Andre Carter attended Oak Grove High School in San Jose, California. As a senior, he was a USA Today first team All-America selection, and the Gatorade California State Player of the Year. He was also the top defensive lineman, and an All-America selection by Parade Magazine.
College career
Andre Carter played for the California Golden Bears from 1996-2000. During his junior and senior years he was a unanimous All-Pac 10 selection. In 2000 he won the Morris Trophy, awarded to the Pac 10's top defensive lineman as voted on by the starting offensive lineman from the conference. In addtition to being selected as the Golden Bears most valuable player, Carter was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy given to the nation's top defensive player.
NFL career
San Francisco 49ers
Andre Carter was picked by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1st round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played linebacker on the team although his previous position was defensive end. While playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Andre Carter made 154 solo tackles, 32 sacks, and 12 pass deflections in 69 games.
Washington Redskins
Andre Carter signed a six-year, $30 million with the Washington Redskins as a unrestricted free agent on March 14, 2006. In his first year with the Redskins, he had 56 total tackles and six sacks.
Personal
He is the son of former Denver Broncos defensive tackle Rubin Carter.
