Matthew Algie was born in Greenock, a port on the River Clyde, in 1810. He founded the company that now claims to be the United Kingdom's "leading independent coffee roaster". The eponymous company was founded in Glasgow in 1864, and since then has continued as a family-run business.

Matthew Algie specialise in their own coffee and tea, as well as machines for their preparation.
