Myst is a popular point-and-click adventure game, and one of the most popular games of all time.

Point-and-click adventure games are a subgenre of graphical adventure games using a point-and-click interface, i.e., a game where the player interacts with the game environment and objects using an on-screen cursor. A number of point-and-click games also involve some amount of pixel hunting. A very popular series of point-and-click games for the PC is a series called Myst.

History

An early example of the genre is Maniac Mansion, from LucasArts in 1987.

In 1988, popular adventure game publisher Sierra Online created Manhunter: New York. It marked a major shift for Sierra, having used a text parser for their adventure games akin to text adventures.

Myst marked a major landmark in the genre, selling over 9 million copies.

The genre has since seen a relative decline, although there continues to exist a hardcore fanbase. Several online games created in Adobe Flash challenge the player to interact with objects in an environment. These form very short and basic point-and-click adventure games. A popular sub-genre is known as escape the room games.
