"According to Network Rail"? Really, well. What is the ballast? What is the sub-ballast? What is the sub-grade/formation? Are they the same thing? Always? Why is it important to reduce stress on the sub-grade? How do the various components achieve this? How does a "muddy ballast...generate a battery effect" (I got here from Track_circuits (Officially part of WikiProject Trains)? ISTM that many Rail related pages are thin on useful detail and assume an already complete knowledge of rail jargon (See the Jointless track circuits section of the Track_circuits page. Completely useless to anyone.) Hardly encyclopedic.
