Newport, introduced in 1957, is a brand of menthol cigarettes produced by Lorillard Tobacco Company of Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. Newport is the number one menthol cigarette in the United States (as of 2005), and the most popular cigarette brand behind Marlboro.[1] Newport cigarettes are particularly popular among the African-American community; the same 2005 survey stated that 49.5% of all cigarette sales to African-Americans were of the Newport variety.

The cigarettes are produced in full flavor, medium, and light varieties, and packaged in two sizes: Kings, and 100s. The 100 mm cigarettes also have a much longer filter. Newport lights, full flavor, and full flavor 100 are available in soft packs.

Newport cigarettes are known to smokers for their intensity (high nicotine and tar content). They have among the highest nicotine and tar content of all cigarette brands, and are among the top 5 in highest price [citation needed]. The common Newport box contains a white top, with Newport written on it, and from then on, horizontal green stripes, as well as a spinnaker logo.

In November 2007 Philip Morris (producer of Marlboro cigarettes) sued Lorillard Tobacco Company, charging that the Newport use of the 'M' symbol (for Menthol) infringed on the Marlboro trademark logo.
