Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions
The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) is a self-described "non-violent, direct-action group originally established to oppose and resist Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in the Occupied Territories."[1] It was founded by Jeff Halper, a former professor of Anthropology at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
ICAHD opposes Israel's colonization, occupation, and control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and believes that peace cannot be achieved as long as these practices continue.[2] ICAHD also accuses Israel of longstanding and ongoing human rights violations and asserts that Israel's actions have led to an emerging Apartheid in the Occupied Territories.[3]
Activities
ICAHD's activities include publication of books and articles on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, international advocacy, and protest and non-violent resistance operations on the ground. It also organizes the rebuilding of demolished houses with volunteers from various international countries.[4]
2004
ICAHD-USA is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Funding
According to ICAHD’s website, its “activities . . . depend on assistance from individuals and organizations in Israel and abroad. ICAHD also receives financial support from the European Union.”[5]
In 2005, the EU provided ICAHD with €472,786 for a project called "Re-framing: Providing a Coherent Paradigm of Peace to the Israeli Public" under the Partnership for Peace program.[6][7]
Praise
In 2006, the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker service organization, nominated Jeff Halper for the Nobel Peace Prize due to his ICAHD related work, noting ICAHD for use of, "dialogue between groups to open communication, foster reconciliation and challenge stereotypes".[8][9]
In 2007, ICAHD received the Olive Branch Award from Jewish Voice for Peace.
Criticism
The pro-Israel advocacy groups CAMERA and NGO Monitor have criticized ICAHD for its activities. CAMERA alleges that Halper has made misstatements about Palestinian economic and agricultural growth, and takes issue with Halper's assertion that Israel is "politically, and in the end, morally untenable." [10] [11] NGO Monitor criticizes ICAHD for "demoniz[ing]" Israel; for "promot[ing] the “Durban Strategy” of boycotts; for characterizing Israeli policy as apartheid in nature; and for "grossly distorting" the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.[12]
