Welcome. This is the talk page for BetacommandBot, an automated bot that performs a high volume of tasks on a daily basis. More information on what this bot is approved to do can be found here..

If you have a question or complaint regarding this bot's edits, before doing so please note: Questions and complaints can be directed to the Image Copyright Help Desk where a team of volunteers will endeavor to offer useful advice in a convivial atmosphere. If you are using this service, remember that help desk volunteers are not responsible for BetacommandBot and do not decide which images get tagged. Please try and remain calm when using the help desk.

If you believe the bot is malfunctioning, you can leave a message on this talk page, or find further contact information for the operator Betacommand at his user page. Before you proceed, however, please note the following:

  1. There is a very clear policy regarding the use of non-free images. This policy is located at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. As this policy relates to copyright protections, most provisions must be followed to the letter.
  2. Read this talk page and its archives before registering your complaint. It is likely someone has already registered a similar complaint, and that complaint will have been given an answer.
  3. Read the message left by the bot, and then read the policy that is referenced. While they are, of course, automated messages, they do specify the policy in violation.
  4. Check and make sure the image has a valid source.
  5. Make sure that the image has a valid Fair use Rationale (A guide can be found here). There is a very clear policy regarding having fair use rationales on fair use images. This policy is located at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria point #10(c). Rationales must be provided for each use of an image. Also please see Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline.
  6. I will not add rationales for you; as the uploader it is your responsibility NOT mine.
  7. I do not want to see images deleted.
  8. All images must comply with policy. In copyright, "close enough" isn't.
  9. A generic template tag is NOT a valid fair use rationale. Fair use rationales cannot be automated.
  10. Before you say, but <place image name here> is just like my image and isn't tagged for deletion: that image will be tagged too, the bot just hasn't gotten around to it yet.
  11. We do not permit fair use, copyrighted images to exist on Wikipedia if rationales for that image's use are not provided. Please see Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#Images.2Fmedia #6.
  12. For quite some time, we have attempted to encourage people to provide rationales. People have asked for time to fix images, and it has been granted more than once. The results of this effort have been dismal at best. Once again, I do not want to see images deleted. However, Wikipedia must comply with copyright law. Please see the Wikimedia Foundation's resolution on this matter at m:Resolution:Licensing policy point #4.
  13. The creator of this bot has come under fire for performing this work manually. One of the main complaints is that the effort to tag images could just as readily be spent providing rationales. This is not the case; the uploader and/or user of each fair use image is the person who should provide the rationale. A non-involved editor can not know under what principles the user of an image intended such use as fair use.
  14. The use of fair use, copyrighted images on the Wikimedia servers is covered by United States law. Our policies with respect to this bot's actions are based on that law. Please see Fair_use#Purpose_and_character.
  15. Bug reports are very welcome; tagging images as this bot is doing per policy is not a bug.

Merry Christmas!

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Cmartin stromata.jpg

Please note: Additional copyright information for the Stromata cover artwork was added on Wednesday, December 26. This image is used with permission from the copyright holder AND follows Wikipedia policy based on the following terms:

"Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

   # It illustrates educational articles about the album from which the cover illustration was taken.
   # The image is used as the primary means of visual identification of the article topic.
   # The use of the cover will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original. In particular, copies of the image could not be used to make illegal copies of the album artwork on another CD.
   # It is a low resolution image.
   # The image is only a small portion of the commercial product.
   # It is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value."

Thank you.

Fair use suggestion

Whenever I have run into fair use problems on my images, I have asked for suggestions on how to make my image fair use. My normal reply was something along the lines of "describe why it is fair use." This a vague suggestion and not knowing what needed to be stated for rationale, I was told 'Not good enough' and my image was deleted. This is until I found the "Non Free / Fair Use" template.

When your bot adds the dispute tag, it would be helpful to insert a blank version of the "non Free / fair use" template. This way a user with a lower understanding of the fair-use rules, may be able to quickly describe what needs to be stated for fair use. This could prevent deletions of work that just needed rationale, preventing new users from being frustrated for no reason.

My suggested markup is: <pre><nowiki>

Ex-editor

I logged in there for the first time in nine months, after not editing for nine months before that because I'm reading through some articles and remembered I had popups or whatever it's called set up. And got the orange bar & found a torrent of bot messages on my talk page.

I'm an ex-editor. You might as well save the bot's run time and not bother "notifying" me. I won't see it. - SoM (talk) 02:52, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
