The Landakot School (Icelandic: Landakotsskóli) is one of the oldest running schools in Iceland, established in 1896. Centered in Reykjavik, the school tries to make itself as homelike as possible. Students attending the school range in age from 5-16 years old; in Iceland this is 1st-10th grade.

History

Founed in 1896 Landakot School is one of the oldest in the nation. It was run by the Church of Iceland, but since 2005 it has been independently run. There are currently 162 students, coming from 25 different countries including Iceland.

Cirriculum

Landakot School follows the National Cirriculum, but puts strong emphasis on Mathmatics, Icelandic, and foreign language. They teach the following languages

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Danish
  • Spanish

Compared to other schools in the nation, Landakot School does very well. On stadardized exams the students performed better than other schools in Reykjavik in every subject except for Science.

Teachers

Each grade level has one teacher. In addition, each foreign languge is taught by a different teacher, and there is a capentry class and a dance class.

United States Involvement

In 2006, the United States Embasy presented 110 English language books to the school. These books covered a wide variety of topics. This donation was part of the Embassy's initiatve to support the teaching of English.
