The Fratellis

The Fratellis are an award-winning alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland.

History

They played their first show on March 4, 2005 in the O'Henry's bar in Glasgow, and received their first radio play in 2005 on central Scotland's Beat 106 (now XFM Scotland) Beatscene show hosted by Jim Gellatly. They were discovered by their manager Tony Fratelli in McChuills Bar, Glasgow and were then signed by Fallout Records after just 9 gigs.

The Fratellis EP and Costello Music

The Fratellis EP was released April 3, 2006, featuring the tracks "Creepin' Up The Backstairs", "Stacie Anne" and "The Gutterati?". Their first album, Costello Music, was released on September 11, 2006 and charted at number two in the official UK album charts for three weeks.[1]

The NME ran a two page feature on The Fratellis in the August 10, 2006 issue, proclaiming them "the best new band in Britain". On 14 February 2007 they won the Best British Breakthrough Act, voted for by Radio One listeners, at the 2007 BRIT Awards.[2]

Following on from the success of the album, The Fratellis played a number of festivals in the Summer of 2007, including Glastonbury[3] and mainstage performances at T in the Park[4] and OXEGEN.[5]

The Fratellis have said in many interviews that they got their name from the family of bad guys in the 1985 movie The Goonies. This is also mentioned as a source of the band's name by Real Network's Rhapsody music service. However, Barry Wallace's (Barry Fratelli) mother's maiden name is also Fratelli. Fratelli in Italian means "brothers".

On 1 October 2007, they released their first live DVD "Edgy In Brixton" in the UK, which was recorded at the Brixton Academy in London. The DVD contains a full live performance and the band being asked questions by members of The Fratelli's website. On 30 October, it was released in the United States.

The chorus from the song "Chelsea Dagger" has been adopted by many sports teams in Britain as their anthem, it is played when they score a goal.

Second album and other recordings

The Fratellis also recently recorded a cover of "All Along the Watchtower" for Radio 1's 40th Anniversary Double Album, Radio 1: Established 1967.

On November 20, 2007, the band commenced work on their second album and booked rehearsal space in Glasgow and on 13 January 2008, it was announced that work on the record was complete. The first single from the new album could be released in as little as one month (February 2008), and the album is expected to be released soon after. [6]

They will perform at the Versus Cancer charity gig at Manchester's MEN Arena on 23 February 2008.[7]
