The shoulder shrug is an exercise in powerlifting and bodybuilding. The lifter stands erect holding either a barbell or two dumbells with an overhand or mixed grip. The hands should be about shoulder width apart. The bar hangs down in front of the thighs. To execute the exercise, the lifter raises the shoulders as high as possible, and then lowers them, while not moving the arms or body at all. Shoulder shrugs are used to develop the trapezius.
