Life As We Knew It is a young adult novel & science fiction by American author Susan Beth Pfeffer, and first published in 2006. Published by Harcourt Books, it was a Junior Library Guild Premier Selection. Since its publication, Life As We Knew It was named to the American Library Association Best Books For Young Adults list, as well as its Teen Top Ten list.

In addition, Life As We Knew It was a finalist for the Andre Norton Award, the Quill Book Award, the Hal Clement Award, and the Coventry Book Award. It has been nominated for young reader awards in twelve states.

Plot synopsis

The story takes place in Pennsylvania and tells the story of a 16 year old girl whose life is interrupted when a meteor hits the moon. As a result, worldwide disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes occur. Her family must get by as a seemingly apocalyptic winter comes about. Throughout the novel her relationship with her friends and relationship with her family is tested.

Companion Novel

A companion novel, the dead & the gone, will be published by Harcourt in June 2008. It will examine the same events as they unfold in New York City, revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales. When Alex's parents disappear in the aftermath of tidal waves, he must care for his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and food and aid dwindle.
