Formula Atlantic

Formula Atlantic began in the United Kingdom in 1971. It was open to production-based engines between 1100cc and 1600cc. The first approved engines were:

Alfa Romeo 1600 dobc BMW 1600 sohc Datsun 1600 sohc Fiat 124 dohc Ford 1500/1600 pushrod Lotus Ford dohc Porsche 1582 pushrod Ford-Cosworth BDA

The BDA powerplant soon became the dominant engine (until being replaced by a Toyota powerplant in the 1980s.)

The formula specified: maximum of five gears minimum weight of 968 lbs maximum fuel capacity of 15 gallons
