Poptropica
Poptropica is a massively multiplayer online game and virtual world in which kids can travel, play games, compete in head-to-head competition, and communicate safely with each other.
Poptropica was developed by Family Education Network[1], a division of Pearson, which also owns kids’ site Funbrain.com.
Characters / Citizens / Poptropicans
When users first arrive at Poptropica, they are given a character avatar they can either customize immediately, or modify while playing. Once a user enters the Poptropica virtual world, they can choose an island they want to explore. Currently, there are three virtual islands on Poptropica.
User Safety
Poptropica uses safe, kid-friendly, prescripted chat.
Character names are also pre-constructed to prevent any profanity or personal information to enter the world.
Islands
Early Poptropica Island
Early Poptropica was the first island created for the game. Users encounter the original settlers of Early Poptropica, and they are in distress. They are 80’s style characters who have lost missing items from their village. In order to find them, the user has to explore the island while encountering mischievous characters like the giant in the sky, or the slimy spider.
Shark Tooth Island
Shark Tooth Island was the second island released in Poptropica. The scenario revolves around the inhabitants of the island that are having big shark trouble. The user must help the citizens by completing quests within the island, and subduing the giant shark with a special concoction.
Time Tangled Island
This is the third island released for Poptropica. The scenario revolves around a malfunctioning time machine has messed up history. It is the user’s job to go back in time and set things right. This island was created in conjunction with the editors of Fact Monster to maintain historical accuracy.
