Playa Zipolite

Playa Zipolite is a small beach community which lies on the Pacific coast of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, about three kilometers west of the village of Puerto Ángel. It, along with Puerto Ángel and San Agustinillo are known as the "Riviera Oaxaqueña. [1]The name Zipolite, sometimes spelled Sipolite or Cipolite, may have come from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, meaning "bumpy place" or "place of continuous bumps or hills". Another possible origin of the name is from the Zapotec language, meaning "beach of the dead", so-called for its dangerous ocean currents and riptides, which have taken numerous lives.[2]
A popular destination for backpackers, Zipolite caters to a mostly younger crowd, many of them from Europe, Canada and the USA. One of the attractions is la Playa del Amor, or Beach of Love.[3] This beach is what caused Puerto Angel to gain a certain amount of fame in the 1960's, although nowadays there are more onlookers than actual nudists.[1]
