Portal talk

Account

Obviously this is an account for working on the new Ancient Near East portal, the idea being that it will be of use to users and to constructive editors who choose to contribute to Wikipedia.

The Ancient Near East, being the cradle of civilization, attracts a lot of nationalist editors and fringe theorists. Right now serious editors only show up one or two at a time and quickly get chased out, because individual editors are very easy to harass and pick off. When you do what comes naturally to you and try to edit out bias in certain articles, you will find yourself up against a large number of focused nationalists and experienced "Wiki-laywers"; then somebody will come along and simply summarily sanction you, because between you and a group of committed of POV-pushers, you are an easier target. Then the adminstrators who do this will complain about nationalist bias in the articles.[1] [2] [3]
