Born in 1971 he spent much of his childhood in West Yorkshire where he attended Ilkley Grammar School. [1] Dennis' first taste of Radio came at aged 16 when he begun a voluntary placement at BBC York. His professional broadcasting career took off with several jobs in local independent radio until he returned to the BBC in 1995, working for several local stations in Northern England.

His first major job came in 1998 when he was offered a job by BBC Radio Leeds to head their coverage of Leeds United. His excitable commentary style endeared him to fans of the club and his stint covering the club coincided with Leeds reaching two European semi-finals. In 2002 his talents were regonised when he joined BBC Radio Five Live's commentary team. He has since covered three major international tournaments and has also presented the station's flagship sports programme Sport on 5.
