Comet is a neologism created to describe a set of Ajax techniques enabling a web server to achieve low-latency asynchronous communication to a web browser.[1][2]

Although the term was coined in a March 2006 blog post by Alex Russell,[1] the concept is several years older and has been known by various names, including Ajax Push[3], HTTP streaming, Reverse Ajax[4], HTTP server push, Full Duplex Ajax, JSONRequest Duplex and Pushlets among others.[5][6][7][8]
