Introduction
Counsel is the monthly Journal of the Bar of England and Wales. As the Bar Council's own magazine, it is largely written by and for barristers but it is of interest to all lawyers.
An effective campaigning voice and vibrant magazine, it covers the key issues facing the Bar and legal system in an independent, lively and informative fashion, in addition to profiles, conference reports, personal finance, arts reviews, chambers' announcements and the witty and irreverent 'agony uncle' column for lighter moments.
A distinguished editorial board, mainly drawn from the ranks of practising barristers, works closely with the editorial team to produce a vibrant monthly magazine. With a distribution to 24,000 barristers, Counsel is one of the largest circulation legal magazines in the UK.

Counsel's practical analysis and thought-provoking opinion keeps readers up to date with changes to the legal services market in a time of fast-moving reform. Editorial coverage focuses on the critical legal and professional issues, together with news, letters, profiles, lifestyle and personal finance features, book and theatre reviews, chambers announcements and tenancy vacancies, and satirical content.
History
The journal was founded in 1985.
Circulation
With a controlled circulation of 24,000, Counsel is the only magazine to reach every barrister in England and Wales. The readership commands an extraordinary purchasing power both in a professional and private capacity. Counsel is the perfect publication to gain a response from a highly affluent audience. The total annual income of the Bar is approximately £1.5bn, with median average receipts for barristers with more than 10 years’ of call £80,900.
