The Calle de la Amargura ("Bitterness Street") is a four block long street located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, and it is one of the most known zones in San José, Costa Rica. La Calle, as it is often called, is very near to the University of Costa Rica and other important higher education centers.

Services

La Calle has a lot of small stores and establishments where college students (most are from the University of Costa Rica) come and buy books, print homework, use the internet, eat, and get photocopies at reasonable prices.

Night Life

There are many bars and discos like Terra U, La Villa, Tavarua, Caccio's and Mosaikos, which are known for being very active everyday of the week except Sundays. There are a few fast food shops open all night. One is a pizza place that serves a a quarter of a whole pizza and a refresco for about 700 colones.

Controversy

La Calle is often referred as a dangerous place by night. Drug smuggling is a very common activity and police officers usually come heavily armed, even though it has become much safer lately. Petty theft and pickpocketing are still very common, and visitors are advised to carry few valuables. Suggestions for visitors would be to only bring an identification card and just enough money for drinks and a ride home, to stay in a group, and to not start any type of fighting or respond to any remarks.

It now has a web site: <http://www.calleamargura.com> covers Art, over 5000 Pictures and 250 articles among culture and society in Costa Rica.
