The Notch
The Notch was the nickname for a Strategic Air Command bunker located in Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. It functioned as a Post Attack Command and Control System (PACCS) facility. The bunker was also known as the "Westover Communications Annex" since it was related to nearby Westover Air Force Base.
The underground bunker built into the side of Mount Holyoke was hardened to protect it from the effects of a nearby nuclear blast and the facility was designed so that the senior battle staff could conduct World War Three.
After the US Air Force abandoned the site in the mid-seventies, the Federal Reserve took over and used it as a secure storage facility for their records. Allegedly they stored large sums of money there as well, money that would be used to restart the economy after a nuclear war[citation needed]. http://www.chronos-historical.org/mtholyoke/history3.html
Today, the bunker is a storage facility for the Five Colleges (Massachusetts).
