List of Afghan security forces fatality reports in Afghanistan

This is a partial list of security forces members killed in Afghanistan since the U.S. military invasion in 2001.

Besides serving as an indicator of some of the numbers of policemen, soldiers and private military contractors (PMC's) deaths during specific time periods, this article allows readers to investigate the circumstances of those deaths by reading the citation articles.

Totals

Through July 4 2008 approximately 2,193 policemen, 302 soldiers and 96 private security guards were reported to have been killed.

2008

  • January
    • January 3 - A suicide bomber attacked Indian road construction workers and their Afghan police escorts in the province of Kandahar killing seven people, including six policemen.[6]
    • January 7 - A roadside bomb killed one policeman and one intelligence officer in the province of Helmand.[7]
    • January 13 - Various Taliban attacks in the country killed nine policemen.[8]
    • January 14 - An attack by Taliban commandos on a popular luxuary hotel in Kabul left six people dead, including two PMC's.[9]
    • January 24 - Nine Afghan policemen were killed Thursday during an anti-Taliban operation in Ghazni province.[10]
    • January 25 - A roadside bomb killed four soldiers in Khost province.[11]
    • January 27 - A Taliban ambush in the province of Helmand left two policemen dead.[12]
  • April

72 policemen were killed during the whole month of April.[13]

  • July
    • July 3 - A roadside bomb killed five soldiers in Logar province.
    • July 4 - A Taliban attack on a police checkpoint in Kandahar province left eight policemen dead and two missing.

2007

The list for 2007 only contains the reports of deaths of Afghan soldiers and security guards and not policemen because at the end of the year it was confirmed that 926 were killed in attacks.[14]

  • January
    • January 18 - A suicide bomber killed one soldier in Paktika province.[15]
    • January 27 - Taliban militants killed an Afghan intelligence official. They shot dead director of intelligence of the Yaqoobi district in a market in Khost province.[16]
  • February
    • February 7 - Three PMC's were killed and two were wounded when an explosive-packed motorcycle exploded in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province.[17]
  • March
    • March 23 - 15 PMC's were killed and four were missing when a convoy transporting logistics for NATO troops was ambushed in Shahwalikok district of Kandahar province.[18]
  • April
    • April 1 - A suicide bomber killed two soldiers in Laghman province.[19]
    • April 15 - A suicide bomber killed four PMC's in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province.[20]
    • April 25 - A roadside bomb attack on an Afghan military convoy in the Wazekha area, in Paktika province left seven soldiers dead.[21] Three PMC's were killed when Taliban fighters stormed a road construction company site near the main highway between Kabul and Kandahar.[22]
  • May
    • May 17 - A roadside bomb struck the vehicle of a private security company in Kandahar killing four PMC's.[23]
    • May 30 - A roadside bomb struck the vehicle of a private security company in the province of Helmand killing two PMC's.[24]
  • July
    • July 9 - An Afghan soldier who had links with the Taliban shot and killed four soldiers at an army base in Herat, he also wounded another 10 Afghan and two U.S. soldiers.[25]
    • July 16 - A suicide bomber killed one PMC in Kandahar.[26]
    • July 17 - A roadside bomb attack on an Afghan military patrol in Helmand province left three soldiers dead.[27]
    • July 18 - In Loghar, near Kabul, a shooting attack occured near an office which gives security advice, the attack left a PMC and his driver working for a non-governmental organisation dead.[28]
    • July 21 - Taliban militants attacked a convoy of a private security firm in the Bakwa district of the province of Farah leaving four PMC's dead.[29]
    • July 30 - Taliban militants killed 10 PMC's in the south of the country.[30]
  • August
    • August 11 - Taliban militants ambushed Afghan and NATO-led troops in the province of Badghis killing seven soldiers.[31]
    • August 12 - Two soldiers were killed in heavy fighting in Oruzgan province after militants stormed an army outpost.[32]
    • August 18 - A suicide bomber killed four PMC's in Kandahar along with 11 civilians.[33]
    • August 22 - A suicide bomber killed one PMC in Khost.[34]
    • August 23 - Taliban militants wearing Afghan army uniforms raided a NATO base killing two soldiers and injuring 11 NATO troops.[35] 10 PMC's were killed when a convoy transporting logistics for NATO troops was ambushed in Zabul province.[36]
    • August 28 - Various militant attacks in the country left six soldiers dead.[37]
    • August 29 - A suicide bomber killed two soldiers in Khost province.[38]
    • August 31 - A suicide bomber killed two soldiers in Kabul.[39]
  • Septemeber
    • September 3 - A landmine explosion killed six PMC's in Kunar province.[40]
    • September 20 - Militants killed one PMC in Zabul province.[41]
    • September 29 - A suicide bomber attacked a military bus in Kabul killing 28 soldiers and two civilians.[42]
  • October
    • October 27 - A suicide bomber wearing an Afghan security uniform detonated his explosives at the entrance to a combined U.S.-Afghan base in Paktika province killing four soldiers.[43]
    • October 30 - A roadside bomb struck the vehicle of a district intelligence chief in the Qarghai district of Laghman province killing him and three colleagues.[44]
  • November
    • November 26 - A roadside bomb struck an Afghan army vehicle in Paktia province killing four soldiers.[45]
  • December
    • December 5 - A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a minibus carrying Afghan soldiers south of Kabul killing seven soldiers and six civilians.[46]
    • December 18 - Taliban militants killed 15 PMC's in an ambush near the town of Bala Boluk in the province of Farah.[47]
    • December 30 - Taliban militants killed six PMC's in an ambush on their convoy on Afghanistan's main highway in Wardak province.[48]
    • December 31 - Five soldiers were killed in various Taliban attacks in the country.[49]

2006

558 policemen were killed between March 21 and the end of the year.[50][51]

2005

600 policemen were killed between mid-December 2004 and Mid-May 2005.[52]

200 soldiers of the Northern Alliance were estimated to have died in the initial invasion of the country.[53]
