Introduction

Velha Gôa (Adlem Gõi / Pornne Gõi in Konkani) was the capital of Gôa till 1843. The capital was then shifted to a village about 9 kilometres to its west called Pangim (Ponnjê in Konkani), due to plague. It is often misunderstood for the village of Gôa Velha (Vhoddlem Gõi in Konkani) which lies around 5 kilometres to its south.
