MerchantCircle is a Los Altos, California based start-up, which helps small businesses reach local customers through referrals based on on-line advertising. Its CEO is Ben T. Smith, IV. The company was founded in 2005, and was awarded the title of "Media Newcomer of the year" by AlwaysOn magazine in 2007. [1] In June 2008, MerchantCircle announced over 5 million monthly users, 500,000 registered merchant users, and over 5,000 paying clients[2]. However, reports from third-party website measurement firms suggest that the company's announced traffic figures may be overstated. Web metrics firm Compete.com showed that MerchantCircle had under 2.9 million monthly users in May 2008 while Quantcast represented that MerchantCircle had only 3.5 million such users. The company has an "no rating" rating from the San Jose Better Business Bureau. The agency has compiled over 89 separate complaints from small businesses against MerchantCircle, mainly stemming from MerchantCircle's unsolicited automated phone messages. 90% of these complaints have been addressed according to BBB site.
