Planet Hot Wheels [1] was an MMOR (a racing-oriented MMO) created by Hot Wheels' developers and Mattel, Hot Wheels' parent company. However, in 2004, Hot Wheels permanently removed the game from the site with no warning issued to its players. Many Hot Wheels fans played the game and speculations have been made on why the game was removed, but Mattel has not made any official statements.

Many players enjoyed the virtual racing game because of its use of real world Hot Wheels' models and the ability to upgrade their cars with decals, paint jobs, weapons, and other assorted components.

Speculation

As no warning or explanation was provided about the removal of the game, many players made speculations as to why it was removed. Many players felt it was done because of too much spending and not enough income or site traffic. Meanwhile, others believe the game did not have servers capable of handling all the players.[citation needed] At the time of the game's removal, the number one player, MooMix1, had more than twice the points of any other player,[citation needed] though it was known that he played only a couple hours a day. This reinforced the idea that not enough people were playing the game and Mattel may have pulled the plug. The fact that the game's official website went down several times supports the idea that too many players played it and Mattel couldn't run the servers.

CD's

Mattel released 6 energy cars that each came with a CD and a race for each CD collected. When all were collected a player would be awarded with a special track build and they could race on that track. [citation needed]

Track Editing

There was a rumor going around in the game itself that a track editor would be released for the game. This would allow players to build their own race track and race with people on their friends list. However such a feature has never been instated and most likely never will be due to the game's shutdown.

Codes

The game allowed players to buy Hot Wheels cars in real life, when a player bought a car the car came with a code that could be entered on their Planet Hot Wheels account and they get a prize (usually a item for their car).

Petition

There is a petition to bring the game back.[1]

Mini-games

The game also had single player minigames that players play to get money and buy parts for the multiplayer racing. Minigames also let you unlock more minigames.
