WarGames: The Dead Code is the sequel to the 1983 science fiction film WarGames. It was written by Randall M. Badat and Rob Kerchner and was directed by Stuart Gillard. Production began on November 20, 2006 in Montreal, and the film was released on DVD on July 29, 2008. According to MGM's original press release, the film is budgeted as one in a series of direct-to-DVD sequels.[1] The entire movie was leaked on the internet via the director on BitTorrent around June 27, 2008 - one month before its release date.[citation needed]

Plot

The movie stars Matt Lanter as a computer whiz named Will Farmer who engages a government super-computer named R.I.P.L.E.Y. in an online terrorist-attack simulation game. Little does he know that the online game he plays is actually part of a sophisticated piece of U.S. government spyware designed to find potential terrorists. Homeland Security, now believing Farmer to be a terrorist, sets out to apprehend him.

In a nod to the original film, the games listed available to play are the same. An example of this is Global Thermonuclear War, which was the game Matthew Broderick's character played.[2]

Trivia

  • This movie contains a few references to movies starring Matt Damon. The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Good Will Hunting. The main computer in this film is called R.I.P.L.E.Y., and R.I.P.L.E.Y. tells Will Farmer: "Good Hunting Will".
  • This film also contains reference to another MGM property, Stargate in the form of the game Stargate Worlds which at the time of this film's release was still in development.
