Kong Duen-Yee (Chinese: 江端仪) , known then as Mui Yee, was a beautiful Chinese movie star in Hong Kong. In her several films she depicted a wealthy wife scorned and other romantic characters. Her film career ran throughout the 1950's, at a time when mainstream cinema in Hong Kong was just beginning to challenge the conservative Asian culture. Soon after Yee was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 1960, she retired and decided to become a "preacher" as which she acted for about seven years. Yee died in 1966 due to complications of her cancer.

Conversion to Become a Christian Sect Leader

In 1963, facing certain death, Kong Duen-Yee turned from a worldly lifestyle to religion and reacted to the Pentecostal revival which had reached Asia to start a Christian sect she called the New Testament Church (NTC). She appointed herself a prophetess and an Apostle to continue the work of the book of Acts in the Bible. In addition to teaching "speaking in tongues" as a means of salvation, she began promulgating what she called "Blood, Water and Holy Spirit," of which she claimed God had inspired her from her Bible readings of 1 John 5:6-8, but is actually a teaching that many Christians have always held dear: that Jesus shed His blood for the remission of sins, began His ministry when He was baptized, and ended His ministry when He sent down the Holy Spirit to build His church on the Day of Pentecost. (It is believed by Bible scholars that the Apostle John wrote this letter to refute some erroneous beliefs of the Gnostics that Jesus was just a man and not God-in-the-flesh.)

Kong also taught her primarily female followers (of which several were former fans) teachings that bordered on numerology, including the "7.21 Inspiration" (referring to July 21st), which she dubbed the "rebuilding of the New Testament Church by the Holy Spirit." Yee prophesied that her religious group would become famous and cause worldwide revival. Upon her gruesome death, she was succeeded by her daughter Ruth Chang. But soon afterwards Ruth was convinced by her husband that her mother's teachings were heretical and that the NTC sect is a cult. Chang then moved to Southern California and became a pastor of a Pentecostal Christian church (Assemblies of God).

Continuation of Her Legacy

The fans of Yee wanted to replace Chang to lead the NTC, and eventually found a man in Taiwan named Elijah Hong they believed would be a good fit. The cause for this was a photographic irregularity in a film they shot during a revival meeting. On this film (now on video) there were some red flashes they thought looked like flames, and they were convinced that it was "fire from heaven" and a sign that Hong was sent by God. Later, Hong claimed that he is not the "Son of God," but the "Man of God" and "Prophet of all Nations". Hong's NTC followed many signs they say come from God, including seeing what they call a "rainbow around the sun". Elijah Hong, his "co-workers" and all their "signs" have led them to begin a school called "Eden Homestead" which forces children to work on their "consecrated lands" or mountain farms for free, and to indoctrinate young people with their teachings which include the belief that they are the only true church and that Elijah Hong is their spiritual "grandfather" they should call "Grandpa Hong". These global mountain farms (Holy Mount Zion in Southern Taiwan, Mt. Olive in Paso Robles, CA, and others) have become a worldwide industry that sells organic food.

Troubled Christian Sect

Many have left this organization because they believe Elijah Hong is less of a prophet than he is a profit-seeking con-man. According to them, he is a false prophet because some prophesies he made did not come true. In 1997 Hong led the entire church to yell out loud: "Un-Neuf-Neuf-Sept" (French for 1-9-9-7, or 1997). This phrase (shortened to UNNS) was supposed to mean that Jesus was going to come again and rapture their group in 1997. When it did not come true, Hong tried to stop people from leaving the NTC by leading the remaining members to shout: "Un-Neuf-Neuf-Sept-No-Stop; All The Way To The Top! Hallelujah!" (shortened to UNNSNS). Another prophesy he is known to have made (at least to a few of his followers in private) was that he would be alive when Jesus returns to rapture the church. This man, who currently resides on Mt. Zion in Taiwan, is in his mid seventies, so if Jesus does not return in the next 15 years, yet another of his prophesies will likely have been proven false, solidifying the belief that he is a false prophet. Kong-Duen-Yee's vision of world-wide revival has yet to transpire, which means that so-far, she was also a false prophetess.
