TradeWinds is a weekly business newspaper that covers the global ocean shipping market. With a circulation of 8,000 and self-reported readership figure of 48,000 it is the largest shipping newspaper in the world. The newspaper is owned by Norwegian media group Norges Handels og Sjøfartstidende and based in Oslo, Norway with offices worldwide.
The newspaper was founded in 1990 to compete with well-established rivals including UK-based Lloyd's List and Fairplay. By 2000, according to figures from the independent Audit Bureau of Circulation, the Norwegian upstart had attained the highest paid circulation of any publication in its niche, a circulation lead that had continued to grow as of 2008.
Published on blue newsprint in a tabloid format, TradeWinds is aggressive in appearance and manner in comparison to its competitors. Headlines and pictures are big, stories are short, and there is an evident focus on the individual personalities in the shipowning industry. The paper concentrates on market news about transactions within shipowning, ship chartering, shipfinance and ship insurance. Less weight is given to long-form, background-heavy articles, to opinions or projections than to timely and exclusive reports of market events.
