The title of Earl of Totness was created in the Peerage of England in 1626 for the 1st Baron Carew. It became extinct upon the death of the 1st Earl in 1629.

Two of his uncles were Sir George Rose, who was lost in the sinking of the Mary Rose in 1545, and Sir Peter Carew 1514-1575.
