The High King Mountain Ski Area (Hochkönig) is a large ski resort located in Salzburger Land Austria only one hours drive from Salzburg and Salzburg Airport. High King Mountain is part of the Ski Amade region of Austria and has a network of 28 ski areas which make up the largest ski area in Europe on the same ski pass.

Description

High King Mountain (HKM) ski area is made up of the resorts of Maria Alm, Hintermoos, Hinterthal, Dienten am Hochkönig, and Mühlbach am Hochkönig. The ski area spans eight mountains and covers an impressive area.

Due to its special microclimate High King Mountain has one of the best snow records in the whole of Austria and as a result has a long ski season, usually from the end of November to the middle of April.

There are 36 ski lifts with a mixture of modern and old and over 150km of prepared ski piste. The majority of the ski pistes suit intermediate cruising, and for beginners there are individual nursery slopes in each resort. High King Mountain is also a Mecca for expert skiers with several off piste back bowls, lot’s of tree skiing with one of the highest tree lines in Europe.

Little know by the British ski market, no major tour operators come here and as a result there are no major problems with lift queues or finding a table in one of the 30 or so mountain restaurants.

Originally this region was a collection of private luxury homes owned by the rich and famous, names such as Mars, Porsche, Aldi, and ‘Red Bull’ all have homes here. Nowadays each resort has several high quality hotels, chalets, and apartments to rent most of which can be booked directly through the HKM ‘Central Reservations’
