Electrabel is a Belgium-based energy corporation, with power plants and customers across Europe.
Electrabel was founded in 1990 when Intercom, Ebes and Unerg merged to form the present company. For a long time the French company Suez held a slight majority stake in Electrabel, but in 2005 that stake increased to 96.7%. The rest of the stock remained tradable at Euronext, but Electrabel was removed from the BEL20 as a result. Suez finally completed a squeeze-out of the remaining shareholders on 10 July 2007, when the company was delisted from the stock exchange. Following Suez's 2008 merger with Gaz de France, Electrabel is now a subsidiary of GDF Suez. Electrabel has a joint venture with the Italian utility "Acea".
Power plants
The larger power plants that Electrabel owns are:
- The Eemscentrale in the Netherlands, a combined cycle gas turbine plant with a generation capacity of 1705 MW.
- Nuclear Plant Doel and Nuclear Plant Tihange in Belgium, both nuclear power plants with a capacity of 2736.9 MW and 2423.1 MW respectively.
- The Coo-Trois-Ponts, a pumped storage hydroelectricity plant in Belgium, with a total capacity of 1307 MW.
- Dunamenti in Hungary, a thermal power plant with a capacity of 1238.4 MW.
