Crossroads in Crossgates, approaching from the M90 motorway

Crossgates is a small village in Fife, Scotland.

It is about a mile east of Dunfermline, and is best known for being former home of the guitarist Stuart Adamson, of The Skids, Big Country and The Raphaels[1]. Crossgates has a school which HME regard as very good. There are some shops in Crossgates too including a newsagents, a fish & chip shop, and a Chinese takeaway. There are also pubs. The village has a few parks scattered amongst the residential areas. There is also a football pitch where local children regularly play.

There is a long history and tradition of deep and surface mining around Crossgates, and sits above the Fordell Day Level complex. Currently, despite significant local objection from a strong and loyal local community, ATH Resources have opened an Opencast mine to the South of the village, with the intention of removing 2,000,000 tons of coal. Disappointingly, this coal is to be exported to England, while foreign coal is imported to serve Longannet coal station just a few miles away.

One benefit to Crossgates is the opportunity to apply for community project funding as a direct result of the mine workings, from a community fund formed on a cost per tonne basis by the miner.

Whilst small, Crossgates does support a healthy number of small and large businesses.

Crossgates is designated as "Fife's first energy efficient village" More input is required here as to what this means, and whether it is still an active programme
