Madureira is a neighbourhood n the North Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Its population is basically middle class and lower middle-class, including some shanty towns (favelas). The suburb is the hub to several buses lines that reach several parts of the city of Rio de Janeiro and, most noticeable, its widespread commerce being one of the major commercial and economic hub of the city and the biggest one in the outer metropolitan area. The suburb is also famous for being home of the sama school Portela, one of the most traditional samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. The suburb borders other suburbs such as Cascadura, Cavalcanti, Vaz Lobo, Engenheiro Leal, Turiaçu, Campinho and Oswaldo Cruz (Rio de Janeiro), and it has approximately 50 thousand inhabitants.
