Purleigh is a village on the Dengie peninsula about four miles south of Maldon in the English county of Essex. The village is part of the Purleigh ward of the Maldon district[1].

History

At the time of the Domesday survey, the manor house, Purleigh Hall, was owned by Eustace, Earl of Bologne. There are extensive vineyards in Purleigh, owned and operated by New Hall Vineyards. The firm was established in 1969 and produces c. 250,000 bottles a year[2].

Lawrence Washington (1602-1655), the great-great-grandfather of George Washington, was rector in the village from 1632 until 1643.[3].[4]

Local amenities

There are two public houses, The Bell and The Fox and Hounds. The Bell is a 14th century building that was refurbished in the 16th century[5].

The local school is Purleigh Community Primary School [6].

Religious sites

The parish church is All Saints. It is of 14thcentury origin[7]
