Mercer Union is a contemporary art centre in downtown Toronto, Canada that promotes the production and exhibition of Canadian art. It is located close to the West Queen West arts district.
Mercer Union was established and incorporated in 1979 and began as an artist-run centre in Toronto through the collective efforts of artists who believed in alternative art production and presentation.
In 1993, the Gallery gained national attention for an exhibit by artist Eli Langer that featured drawings of children in sexual positions. The artist and gallery were accused of violating Canada's new child pornography laws but were later acquitted.[1][2]
