The British science fiction television series Doctor Who will include three specials to be broadcast around Christmas 2009. The first of these, "The Waters of Mars",[6] will be "very closely linked" to the other two without being a three-parter.[7]
In April 2009, Doctor Who writer and producer Russell T Davies said that this special would air "probably ... November-ish".[8]
In the story, the Doctor will be joined by a new companion named Adelaide, played by Lindsay Duncan. Producer Nikki Wilson (née Smith) described the character as "the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet."[5]
Filming for the special began on 23 February 2009.[5] In late February, David Tennant, Duncan and other actors were seen filming in Victoria Place, Newport.[9] The filming took place on a city street, which the production team covered with artificial snow.[9] Also present during filming were a small robot inscribed with the word "GADGET" and Ood Sigma, from the 2008 episode "Planet of the Ood".[10]
