Lithothamnion is a genus of thalloid alga comprising 103 species. Its members are known by a number of common names.[note 1] The monomerous, crustose thalli are composed of a single system of filaments which grow close to the underlying surface. Branches emerge repeatedly from these filaments, growing upwards to the upper surface. a coaxial anatomy and secondary pit connectionsare present in the organisms but lack haustoria, haustoria, palisade cells, and secondary pit connections. Lithothamnion reproduces by means of multiporate conceptacles; it produces tetraspores and dispores.
