Alla prima
Appearance
Alla prima is a painting technique in which the work is completed in one session without time for the paint to dry. The term comes from the Italian "at once", and may also be referred to as premier coup.[1]
History
The technique was first described in the 17th Century and became widely used in the 19th with the common availability of oil paints of a thick consistency suitable for the method.[2] More recently, in digital art a similar technique speed painting has become popular.
