Gifford High School is a government owned boys only high school in Bulawayo. The school was founded in 1927 as Bulawayo Technical School led by Mr P H Gifford and four teachers with an enrollment of about 39 pupils. High school status was achieved in 1931. Since 1953 it has been located on Matopos Road, just adjacent to Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Show grounds. In 1962, it was renamed Gifford Technical High School in honour of its founder Mr P H Gifford. The school's motto is Hinc Orior which is Latin for simply " From here I arise" or specifically "from these beginnings my formed mind springs". The school's major rival is Milton High School. It has a well established reputation in the Zimbabwe chess circles having won the national schools championship and the regional league on a number of occasions. Among the chess players who have been produced are Savva Kyriakides (former Zimbabwe olympiad chess player), Jeff McCrone and Genius Runyowa. Probably, the most notable alumni is Brian Kagoro (lawyer, civil activist).[citation needed]it is rhe leading school in rugby and volleyball and has produced public speakers like joshua nyamuronda(a 1990 science student of amazing talents), shadreck siziba dexter mukada malvin moyo and many more. Its worth noting the volleyball team greats such as dumisani siwela and farai mutevera. it is worth noting that the uppers of 2008 did their best to uplift the school The school now lies in ruins, as does the rest of the country of Zimbabwe.
