The Increment is alleged by Richard Tomlinson, a fomer British Secret Intelligence Service officer, to be a Paramilitary unit which carries out covert operations on behalf of Her Majesty's Government.[1][2] Intelligence failings during the Falklands war persuaded UK government ministers to approve a 'special duties' military unit known informally as 'The Increment'. [3]

Structure

Richard Tomlinson claims that operators are selected from the 'cream of the crop' of the SAS and SBS, and work on MI5/MI6 supervised missions. [4] Operatives from the Joint support group, the SRR and the Joint Special Forces Aviation Wing (JSFAW) have also been implicated in the involvement with 'the Increment'. [5] The specific units from JSFAW which Tomlinson says provide air support to their elitist counter-parts are 7 and 47 RAF squadrons. [6]

UK Intelligence and Security Report 2003

A report commissioned by AFI Research called the 'UK Intelligence and Security Report 2003'[7] goes into further detail about the role of 'The Increment' as part of the SIS para-military capability.

The section of the report referring explicitly to 'The Increment' can be found at this link:

Article in Asia Times 2003

Part of an article released by The Asia Times subtitled "The SAS can provide the skills" details the use of the increment by the SIS and triggered the questioning of ministers over SIS paramilitary capabilities. [8]

Operations

Tomlinson alleges that the unit was involved in planning to assasinate Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević. Other rumours[who?] point at involvement of the Increment in the death of Dr David Kelly and the death of Princess Diana as well as false flag terrorist operations, secret military assistance to foreign powers and the planting of agents in foreign countries [9]

Liason

The Increment is controlled by a Ministry of Defence Adviser in the Secretariat, MODA/SO. [10]

Popular Culture

The theme is used as a plot device in the television series Spooks and in a book by author Chris Ryan
