In the middle ages there was a Guild of St George in Salisbury, England. My understanding is that the city was too small for seperate trade guilds and so the craftsmen & merchants formed a single guild. Added to the confusion is that the city's goverment was controlled by the Bishop of Salisbury. The guild competed with the Bishop for control of the city and was headed by a Mayor. The is why the city's oldest municipal building is the Guildhall.
