The first battle of Krasnik started on August 23rd, 1914 in the province of Galicia, in northern Austria, and ended two days later on the 25th. The Austro-Hungarian First Army defeated the Russian Fourth Army. It was the first victory by Austra-Hungary in the First Word War. As a result the First Army's commander, Viktor Dankl, was (briefly) lauded as a national hero for his success. The battle also saw the advancement of Carl Gustaf Mannerheim's career. The future Finnish commander served with Russian Fourth Army at Krasnik and was awarded with the Sword of St. George.
