Churt is a village and civil parish in the borough of Waverley in Surrey, England. It is located on the A287 road between Hindhead and Farnham, and is split by the Surrey/Hampshire borders. Its origins date back to Saxon period. The original boundary stones are visible at the junction of Green Lane and Green Cross Lane. The village of churt is recorded as being part of the "Great Sacks" that belonged to the Bishop of Winchester. Frensham Great Pond, dug to provide the Bishop of Winchester, Hedda, with fresh fish, is the north border. Both the great and little pond were emptied durring the world wars as they were Land Marks. With the areas of Hankley, Bordon, Bramshott having a heavy military presence, it was advisable. The ponds have also been used in numerous films; Carry on Jack, The Mummy and more recently Eden Lake. The parish clerk is Shirley Burrill.[2]

Notable residents, past and present

Industrialist Frank Mason spent the later part of his life in the area, and provided the comminity with a village hall, which remains the hub of the village. The Village of Churt has always been a special place, with the likes of the Lindsey Clark Brothers and Michael Stenning fighting to keep the village alive durring very difficult periods. The Elson clan, the Silvesters, Wells, Harris, and Plants, being residents over numerous generations. The pre-raphealite artist Sir John Everett Millais had links with the village. The world famous painting "bubbles", which featured a boy sitting on a bucket and blowing a clay pipe,was one of his most recognised works. It was used by Pear Soap company on its adverts and packaging, was of a little boy who grew up to be First Lord of the Admiralty. His name was Admiral Sir William James. A respected lady by the name of Mrs Lash, played a leading role in the dramatic society. No suprise that her most famous grand children are the actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes. The Blue Peter presenter John Noakes resided in the village, and would often be seen collecting his papers in a battered red Mini van, complete with the famous SHEP the dog. The world renowned gentleman of golf commentating Mr Peter Alliss has made the village his home for many years. Kevin Keagan resided in Green Lane, whilst playing for Southampton Football Club. Frances Stevenson, wife of British Prime Minister David Lloyd George lived in the village, his family still has presence. The cricketing brothers Harry Walker and Thomas Walker were born in the village. The journalist Anthony Loyd grew up in Churt. [citation needed] The Police drummer, Stuart Copeland, had a short spell in the village, with his family. The music links do not stop there, singer Robbie Williams has been known to spend a little time in his house on the edge of the village. Wishanger Recording Studios are world famous, and legendary rock producer John "Mutt" Lange did some his best work from here with the likes of THE CARS, AC/DC and more. The top jewellery designer David Buxton spent a lot of youth in the area, and attended the local primary school for a short period, until he had a altercation with the headmaster. Roger Black, the Olympic Gold medal winner, also lives in the village with his family.
