Amrita Hunjan is a British model and singer. She is perhaps most famous for being a singer in the RnB/pop band Rouge.
Amrita is also known in the British Asian community for being the winner of Miss India UK 2004 and Miss India Worldwide 2005.
Early life
Amrita was born in Leeds and claims to be 'Yorkshire born and bred' [1]. Excellent A level results secured her a place at Birmingham University to study dentistry.
Miss India and Rouge
Despite the intensive studying schedule that the second year of her course brought with it, she excelled at the Miss India UK 2004 competition. Amrita impressed judges with her beauty and charisma and above all in the question and answer session. A fine rendition of Maria McKee's 'Show me Heaven' saw Amrita's singing voice being compared to the likes Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston [2]. She followed this win with an even more impressive victory at the 'Miss India Worldwide' competition held in New Delhi, India in January 2005. Like Miss India UK, this competition is notable for its emphasis on talent, cultural values and intelligence in addition to looks. Once more Amrita's intelligence and presence saw her triumph, this time against international competition [3].
Her voice and music talent got her noticed and with friend Laura Ismail and fellow band member Legha Yousuf the band Rouge was formed in 2005. Over the next year the release of the single 'Don’t be shy' propelled them to fame and the self titled debut album followed [4]. Amrita has performed internationally in places including New York, Dubai and Holland- this popularity is particularly impressive given that she and the other members of her band were university students meaning little opportunity to tour in support.
Plans for the future
Amrita is focussing on her music career having completed her studies, with the next Rouge album set to be produced by Timbaland in Miami [5]. She is currently writing and recording with Rouge and they are said to be 'in no rush to release it until they get it right' [6]. A behind the scenes video of the group including new member Nicola (who replaced Legha) could be found on the Desi Hits website in June 2009 [7].
