Relentless (Kernick novel)
Relentless is a crime/thriller novel by Simon Kernick published in June 2006 (hardback) and in paperback in May 2007. It was one of Richard & Judy's Summer Book Club recommendations in 2007.
Plot
One Saturday afternoon, Tom Meron, happily married father of two with a nice house and good job receives a phone call from his old friend Jack Calley, a high-flying city lawyer who he hasn't seen or heared from in years. Tom thought it might be a friendly talk to his old school mate but it isn't. In the call Tom can hear Jack being murdered; his last words being the first two lines of Tom's address. Terrified and confused Tom grabs his children and flees his house just in time as a car pulls up outside and three men get out; obviously looking for him. Things soon get worse as after leaving his children with his mother-in-law he goes to find his wife only to be attacked in her offices by a balaclava wearing knifeman. Escaping with just a few cuts, he is then arrested by the police on suspicion of murder. Tom is Questioned about the murder of Vanessa Blake (his wifes works partner. he is then shown a pair of gloves that were at the crime scene and the gloves are toms he is also told his wifes finger prints are on the murder weapon.
Meanwhile Mike Bolt is working in to a suicide/murdere case of the chief justice and he things it might have somthing to do
with Jack Calley because he was his solicitor. He find out that the last call Jack made was to Tom Meron landline so he goes to Tom's house to question him but find he is not there and ask the police who are holding him to keep him untill they get there. But he has been realest on bail. When he gets realest on bail he is almost taken back in for more questioning but he runs for it, he gets a good bit away but a car pulls up beside him and he thinks it is the police, as he turns around he is attacked by a man in a balaclava and taken in to the back of the car.
